However, since today's food is often processed and not enriched with minerals, it makes sense to add zinc in the form of a food supplement if we cannot get enough of it through food. The fast pace of life causes us to regularly skip many meals, which can often lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Phytates present in whole-grain bread, cereals, legumes and other foods bind zinc and inhibit its absorption1. Thus, the bioavailability of zinc from cereals and plant foods is lower than from animal foods (meat), so vegetarians sometimes need as much as 50% more zinc than the recommended daily intake. A daily intake of zinc is required to maintain a stable state, since our body does not have a specialised system to store it. When researchers studied zinc intake, they found that 20-25% of older adults had inadequate zinc2 intake, so it makes sense to add it particularly for adults.
